Key Takeaways
- 52-week range shows you the full scope of price movement over the past year.
- Volatility (ATR) tells you how much a pair typically moves on any given day.
- Performance and range data help you set realistic targets and stop losses.
What is a Trading Range?
A trading range is the difference between the highest price and lowest price a currency pair has traded over a given time period. The 52-week range, for example, tells you the full scope of price movement over the past year.
If EUR/USD has a 52-week high of 1.1200 and a low of 1.0500, the range is 700 pips. This context helps you understand whether a current move is typical, extreme, or historic.
Performance Metrics
Performance tells you how much a pair has moved from its starting price. Common time frames are 1-year, 6-month, 3-month, and year-to-date.
For example, if EUR/USD started the year at 1.0800 and is now at 1.0900, that's a +1.85% performance year-to-date. This helps you identify which pairs are trending up or down and by how much.

Volatility and ATR
Volatility is how much a pair moves on any given day. A high-volatility pair might move 100 pips per day; a low-volatility pair might move 20 pips per day.
Average True Range (ATR) is a technical indicator that measures average volatility over a period (typically 14 days). If EUR/USD has an ATR of 60 pips, expect typical daily moves of around 60 pips.
Higher volatility creates bigger trading opportunities but also bigger risks. Use volatility metrics to set realistic profit targets and stop losses.
Using Range and Volatility in Your Trading
Knowing the 52-week range helps you avoid being caught off-guard by historic price moves. If a pair is near its 52-week high, it may be overbought. Near its low, it may be oversold.
Volatility helps you size your positions and stops. If you expect a 100-pip move and the pair's ATR is 60 pips, a 100-pip stop is large relative to normal movement—you might get stopped out on noise.
